Indigenous Management of Marine Turtle and Dugong: legal opportunities and impediments.

by Jann Crase

The NAILSMA Dugong and Marine Turtle Project aims to support and facilitate Indigenous management and sustainable use of these species as a critical management approach for these species.

To further the long-term outcomes of the project, an analysis was needed of the legal and policy framework within which Indigenous management of marine turtle and dugong specifically, and sea country generally, so that opportunities to strengthen Indigenous management could be identified and barriers overcome.

The purpose of this report is to provide information and advice to the NAILSMA Dugong and Marine Turtle project partners in relation to the legal opportunities and impediments to increased Indigenous management of marine turtle and dugong.

Exploration of the policy and institutional context within which these species are managed was undertaken to clarify the nature of existing opportunities and impediments.

Report available for download mid April.
