Claravale Crossing, Daly River

By Mona Liddy

There has been a lot of talk about development in the Daly River region with plans for more farms that will need more water.

When the Northern Territory Government set up a community planning process there wasn’t enough time to properly talk to traditional owners about the importance of the river to their lives.

Land & Water Australia has given CSIRO and the Northern Land Council a small grant to work on understanding the cultural values of the river.

I am a Wagiman woman who has been employed by CSIRO to collect life histories from all the language groups within the Daly River area facing development pressure.

I will be talking to people about river stories, the changes people have seen, the most important places and old people’s stories.

The groups I will be talking to are the Wadjigan, Malak Malak, Kamu, Wagiman, Wardaman, Dagoman, Murramuninji and Marranungu.

If there are other groups that would like to be involved you can contact me or Sue Jackson, details below.
