Current Projects in North Australia

Warddeken

Bush Heritage and WWF jointly supported Warddeken Traditional Owners to prepare their Indigenous Protected Area Action Plan and BHA continues to provide support for Warddeken Land Management Ltd to work towards achieving their goal of establishing an IPA over Warddeken country. Part of this project involves looking into ways of encouraging and securing philanthropic support for Warddeken conservation related activities.

Kaanju

BHA and the Chuulangun Aboriginal Corporation formed a partnership in 2005 after an approach from a Kaanju Traditional Owner requesting assistance for him and his people in continuing to implement the IPA management plan. BHA provides support for a coordination position with Chuulangun who provides project management as well as working on the ground with other Traditional Owners undertaking priority land management activities. Stage one of the Kaanju Homelands Indigenous Protected Area was declared in 2008. www.kaanjungaachi.com.au

Wunambal Gaambera

In the Kimberley Bush Heritage and the Wunambal Gaambera Aboriginal Corporation have recently entered into the first stage of what is expected to be a long term partnership. The Wunambal Gaambera Healthy Country project aims to identify key conservation values and implement agreed appropriate actions on Wunambal Gaambera country in the North Kimberley. Through this partnership the crossover areas where aspirations of the traditional owners to look after and actively manage their country meet with BHA aspirations of having country managed for conservation will be identified and supported.
