Protecting the country: Senior Bardi-Jawi Ranger Kevin
George burining marine debris collected from an AQIS patrol.

What sort of information is I-Tracker collecting?

I-Tracker can be used to collect information about a wide range of natural and cultural resources. As a trial the I-Tracker network is using a Sea Ranger Patrol Database developed by the Djelk Rangers of Maningrida, Northern Territory. This comprehensive database enables rangers to collect information on virtually all the events and sightings they are likely to encounter:

  • dugong and turtles in the water
  • turtle nesting areas
  • sick and stranded wildlife
  • marine debris and other rubbish
  • fish kills
  • commercial and recreational fishing activity
  • quarantine information
  • illegal fishing activity

Groups participating in the trial will provide feedback on the I-Tracker tools and information collection processes. NAILSMA will review this feedback and analyse the information collected to make I-Tracker work better for Indigenous Land and Sea managers.
