I-Tracker Training

Training is an essential part of the I-Tracker project and complements the on-going technical support provided to Saltwater People Network participants by NAILSMA.

Training is delivered in structured formats—often as a workshop for a group of Indigenous rangers and ranger coordinators—and through practical on-the-job learning sessions, often conducted on-country.

In the first year of the Saltwater People Network, structured and informal workshops were conducted across the north—from the Kimberley to Cape York—and more training opportunities are planned for rangers in the future.

Check out the videos below to hear from some of the people who have received I-Tracker training.

CLCAC and NAILSMA develop trial land-based application

In April 2010, representatives from Carpentaria Land Council Aboriginal Corporation (CLCAC), Wellesley Islands Rangers, Normanton Rangers, and Gangalidda and Garawa Rangers and NAILSMA met in Normanton, QLD for an intensive workshop to develop a trial I-Tracker application for the land management activities of the ranger groups based in the Gulf of Carpentaria. ‘Application’ is the term used to describe a set of questions pre-programmed into CyberTracker software.

The CLCAC rangers identified key land-based activities that they wanted to collect data about such as fire, feral animal control, and biodiversity work. They then worked with NAILSMA to develop a trial I-Tracker application that included questions about these activities. The trial land data application will complement the I-Tracker Saltwater Country Patrol application and allow the CLCAC rangers to collect all of their spatial land and sea country management data using a standardised method.
