Climate Change and Indigenous People

An International Expert Group Meeting on Indigenous Peoples and Climate Change convened in Darwin 2 - 4 April 2008. This meeting was coordinated by the Secretariat of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, United Nations University – Institute for Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) and NAILSMA.

In addition to this, an International Public Forum on Indigenous Peoples and Climate Change: The Tropical Australian Experience was held in conjunction at Charles Darwin University. Transcripts of presentations of this meeting can be downloaded from the CDU events page: www.cdu.edu.au/whatson.

Themes for this forum included:

    ·                    outlining the effects of climate change on Indigenous peoples;
    ·                    adaptation measures to climate change;
    ·                    carbon projects and carbon trading; and
    ·                    factors that enable or obstruct Indigenous peoples’ participation in the climate change processes.
