Water Resource Management

The Water Resource Management program supports Traditional Owners and their communities to sustainably manage water resources. These resources provide for the health, cultural, social and economic well being of Indigenous people.

The Water Resource Management program integrates community, policy, and research inititives in three projects that work in parallel with each other, the:

1. Indigenous Community Water Facilitator Network (community);
2. Water Policy Group (policy), and
3. research initiatives.

This work and the established partnerships provide a strategic pathway for Indigenous participation in public policy formulation and in the debate about north Australian waters.

The Indigenous Community Water Facilitator Network works with Traditional Owners to ensure their interests are articulated, encouraged and incorporated into planning, water policy decisions and water allocation processes.

The Water Policy Group drives these interests in policy development.

Research partnerships improve the understanding of the cultural, social and economic connection with north Australia’s water resources and aquatic ecosystems through scientific and Indigenous knowledge research.

The Water Resource Management Program also participates in and delivers forums. These forums allow for experts to share experiences, challenges and aspirations for Indigenous sustainable water resource management.
