NAILSMA Dugong and Marine Turtle Project Communication and
Project Support Officer
Personal
Joshua Kitchens was born and raised in Perth, Western Australia.
Prior to reaching his late 20s, Josh hadn't ventured far from
the state-until the travel bug hit! The sights and sounds of Asia
lead Josh to China, Vietnam and Thailand and culminated in a
two-year stopover in Cambodia where he worked for Virachey National
Park. Josh arrived in Darwin mid 2007 to join the NAILSMA team.
Professional
Josh started his career in communications by
studying broadcast operations at Perth TAFE. Initially interested
in working with the television industry, Josh changed his focus
after stumbling upon a short-term contract position at Perth
Zoo-working with multimedia.
The short-term contract evolved into a ten-year association and
enabled Josh to develop a broad range of skills in the
communications field. Josh filled a number of positions while at
the Zoo including Graphic Designer, Publications Officer and
Information Technology Officer (not to forget Merry-Go-Round
Operator), and, eventually specialised in environmental
interpretation.
It was his work in environmental interpretation that led Josh to
Cambodia where he was employed by Virachey National Park as Display
and Graphic Design Specialist. His main role was to develop
communication tools, graphic standards and signage systems that
would later be used across the entire Cambodian National Park
system.
After completing the contract in Cambodia, Josh returned to
Perth for a position with FORM Contemporary Craft and Design,
Western Australia's peek craft and design body. Despite being a
great organisation to be involved with, it wasn't long before Josh
came to the realisation that natural resource management was where
he really wanted to be.
Following his dream, Josh packed his bags and moved to Darwin
after securing a position with NAILSMA as the Communications and
Project Support Officer.
Project
The project is a collaboration of NAILSMA partners across
northern Australia aimed at developing regional and community
capacity for the sustainable community based management of dugongs
and marine turtles.
