I-Tracker Development Officer
Personal
Billee McGinley was born in Melbourne, Victoria. She first
visited Darwin when she was an 11 year old, and dreamed about
living in these tropical savanna parts of Australia until she moved
here over 10 years ago. She enjoys the lifestyle of living in
tropics, the surrounding country and sea, and its colourful people
and wildlife. As well as her interest and education in geography
and natural resource management, Billee is also concerned with
sustainable living, and very much enjoys music, dance and art from
all cultures and societies. She is usually involved in community
events, projects and festivals in her spare time, and likes to go
bush. Billee has travelled extensively in Australia and South-east
Asia, visited India, and most recently the wild west of north
America.
Professional
Billee identifies herself professionally as an Environmental
Geographer. Geography is the spatial study of the patterns and
relationships of cultural, social, political, historical,
biological and physical features on our land. Billee first
completed a Bachelor of Applied Science in Natural Resource
Management, with majors in Human Geography and Plant Biology. Later
she developed her skills in Geographic Information Systems (GIS),
undertaking a Graduate Diploma at Charles Darwin University. Billee
has a diversity and depth of experience in natural resource
management and GIS, having worked professionally on projects in the
NT, across Australia, and overseas for the past 7 years. More
recently she worked for a short time at the Northern Land Council,
which included cultural mapping. Billee is interested in applying
her skills to community driven projects, and to enhance cultural
and environmental knowledge and awareness.
Project
Billee is a Project Development Officer for the I-Tracker
project. “I-Tracker”, short for Indigenous Tracker, is
a project that is helping Indigenous Land and Sea Managers to
collect and manage information about country across remote north
Australia. Utilising the renowned CyberTracker software,
I-Tracker provides Indigenous Rangers with field-tough handheld
touch screen computers that are a user-friendly, culturally
appropriate way to collect important information about natural and
cultural resources.
